Important

Educational guide ito, hindi PD prescription or exchange-training substitute. Bag strength, volume, dwell time, number of exchanges, medications and infection treatment must be individualized by the nephrology/PD team.

Ano ang peritoneal dialysis?

Sa peritoneal dialysis, isang soft catheter ang inilalagay sa abdomen. Sterile dialysis fluid goes into the belly through the catheter, stays for a prescribed dwell time, then drains out carrying waste products and extra fluid.

Dalawang common forms ang CAPD at APD. CAPD is usually done manually using gravity throughout the day. APD uses a cycler machine, commonly overnight. Pareho ang basic principle, pero ang number of exchanges, dwell time at prescription ay individualized ng nephrology/PD team.

CAPD vs APD: ano ang practical difference?

βœ“CAPD: manual exchanges, usually spread through the day, no cycler required.
βœ“APD: a machine performs prescribed exchanges, often while sleeping.
βœ“The right option depends on clinical needs, home situation, schedule, residual kidney function and what the PD program can support.
βœ“Do not copy another patient's number of exchanges, bag strength or dwell time. Those are prescription decisions.

Ano ang kailangan bago makapag-PD sa bahay?

βœ“A functioning PD catheter that has healed enough for the planned treatment start.
βœ“Hands-on training from the PD team on exchanges, connection/disconnection, infection prevention and emergency troubleshooting.
βœ“A clean, dry, well-lit treatment area where pets, dust and unnecessary traffic can be controlled.
βœ“Clean, dry storage for sealed PD supplies away from heat, moisture, chemicals, insects and animals.
βœ“A clear number to call when there is cloudy effluent, abdominal pain, fever, catheter damage, flow problems or machine alarms you cannot resolve.

Bakit sobrang importante ng infection prevention?

Peritonitis and catheter-related infections are among the most important complications of PD. Hand hygiene, correct exchange technique, exit-site care, clean supplies and early reporting of warning signs are central parts of PD training.

The goal of an article like this is to help patients understand the 'why.' The exact sterile technique, products and steps should still come from the PD center because programs can use different connection systems and protocols.

Mga warning signs na hindi dapat i-ignore

βœ“Cloudy drained dialysis fluid.
βœ“New abdominal pain or tenderness, especially with cloudy effluent.
βœ“Fever, nausea or vomiting with concern for infection.
βœ“Redness, swelling, warmth, pain or pus around the catheter exit site.
βœ“New pain or swelling along the catheter tunnel under the skin.
βœ“Catheter crack, disconnection or contamination event.
βœ“Repeated inability to fill or drain properly.

Practical mindset sa PD

PD gives many patients more flexibility, but it is still a daily medical treatment. Good outcomes depend on consistent technique, completing prescribed exchanges, keeping the catheter protected and contacting the team early when something is not right.

If you are considering PD, ask your center to show you the actual equipment, storage needs and training schedule before deciding. Seeing the setup is often more useful than reading a generic list online.

Urgent warning signs

Cloudy PD effluent, new significant abdominal pain, fever with suspected PD infection, or a contaminated/open catheter connection needs prompt contact with the PD team. Do not wait for the next routine clinic visit.
