Important
Postoperative instructions from your surgeon and PD unit take priority over general online guidance. Do not remove dressings, shower, restart lifting, flush the catheter or begin PD exchanges earlier than your team instructed.
Unang mga araw: huwag galawin nang paulit-ulit ang bagong catheter
National Kidney Foundation guidance notes that after placement, a sterile gauze dressing is commonly used to immobilize the new catheter and keep the exit site clean. The first dressing is often left undisturbed for several days unless it becomes soiled, wet or the PD/surgical team instructs otherwise.
The exact timing of the first dressing change depends on the center and surgeon. Follow the discharge instruction you were given rather than copying another patient's schedule.
Kailan puwedeng mabasa o maligo?
General NKF guidance advises keeping the catheter area dry until it has healed enough, commonly around 10 to 14 days, and avoiding showering, bathing or swimming during that initial healing period unless the PD team specifically clears it.
A sponge or washcloth bath may be used while keeping the dressing dry. Once cleared to shower, follow the exit-site cleaning and drying technique taught by your PD nurse.
Heavy lifting at exercise
While the catheter and abdominal wall are healing, avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting until cleared by the surgical/PD team. This helps protect the wound and may reduce mechanical stress on the catheter and abdominal wall.
The exit site can take several weeks to fully heal. Return to work and exercise should be based on the type of surgery, wound healing, pain and your clinician's advice.
Bakit kailangang bantayan ang constipation?
Constipation can cause more than discomfort in PD. Straining can increase abdominal pressure, and significant constipation can contribute to poor catheter drainage or incomplete emptying.
Ask the PD team what bowel regimen is appropriate for you. Do not self-start large amounts of fluid, fiber, stool softeners or laxatives without considering your fluid allowance, potassium/phosphorus limits and other medical conditions.
Ano ang maaaring normal habang naghihilom?
Mild postoperative soreness and small changes around the wound can occur, but the trend should be toward improvement. After the first couple of weeks, the exit-site skin should generally not stay red, painful or hard.
Do not pick crusts or scabs and do not repeatedly twist or pull the catheter to 'check' it.
Kailan tatawag agad sa PD or surgical team?
Urgent warning signs
After PD catheter surgery, worsening redness, pus, fever, severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, uncontrolled bleeding or a catheter that has pulled out/damaged needs prompt medical assessment.
