PD catheter at exit-site care: daily routine, bathing, dressing at infection prevention

Kapag healed na ang PD catheter, araw-araw pa ring kailangang protektahan ang exit site. Ang goal ay bawasan ang tugging, contamination at skin infection na puwedeng mauwi sa tunnel infection o peritonitis.

Checked September 25, 2026Clinical guidance + educational explanation

Important

Exit-site care products and dressing protocols vary by PD program. Follow your own PD nurse's technique and prescription rather than substituting cleansers, creams or dressings from online advice.

Hand hygiene bago hawakan ang catheter

Wash and dry hands carefully before handling the catheter, changing the dressing or doing an exchange. The exact handwashing duration, mask use and connection steps should follow your PD unit's training.

If a caregiver helps, the same infection-control rules apply to them.

Keep the catheter secure

A catheter that repeatedly tugs on the exit site can irritate the skin and increase trauma. Secure the catheter the way your PD nurse taught you and avoid tight clothing or belts that rub the site.

Keep scissors, sharp objects and pets away from the catheter and tubing.

Paano linisin ang exit site?

Use the cleanser and technique prescribed by your PD program. NKF advises avoiding improvisation with harsh products such as alcohol or hydrogen peroxide unless specifically instructed because they can irritate tissue.

Do not pick crusts or scabs. After cleaning, the area should be dried carefully using the method taught by your center before applying the recommended dressing or securement.

Antibiotic cream or ointment: kailangan ba lahat?

Some PD programs prescribe topical antibiotic prophylaxis at the exit site, but current ISPD catheter-infection guidance recognizes that practices differ and recommendations have evolved. Use only the product and schedule prescribed by your own PD team.

Do not independently start, switch or stop antibiotic ointments based on another patient's routine or an old online post.

Bathing, swimming at tubig

Once the exit site has healed and your PD team has cleared you, showering may be allowed with appropriate catheter protection and exit-site care afterward.

Avoid untreated water exposure. Recommendations about swimming can vary by program and local water quality; if your center allows it, follow their waterproof dressing and post-swim cleaning instructions exactly.

Daily check: ano ang tinitingnan?

βœ“Redness spreading around the exit site.
βœ“New swelling or warmth.
βœ“Pain or tenderness that is new or worsening.
βœ“Pus or unusual drainage.
βœ“Skin becoming hard around the site.
βœ“Catheter cracking, pulling or cuff becoming visible.
βœ“Pain or swelling tracking along the catheter tunnel.

Treatment area at supplies

βœ“Keep the treatment area clean, dry and well lit.
βœ“Store PD supplies in a clean, dry place away from heat, moisture, chemicals, animals and insects.
βœ“Do not use damaged, wet, open or expired sterile supplies.
βœ“Keep pets out of the treatment space during exchanges.
βœ“Know who to call if a connection is contaminated or packaging is compromised.

Urgent warning signs

Redness with pus, increasing pain/swelling, fever, tunnel tenderness, or any catheter damage/contamination should be reported to the PD team promptly. Do not wait for it to 'dry up' on its own.
